Re: this, about Stephanie Brown/Spoiler/Robin #4 being the new Batgirl (number… 4?).
Am I the only person who really likes Stephanie/Spoiler? Granted, she’s been written horribly the past few years, and especially during and around the year when Infinite Crisis came out and Didio’s standing orders seemed to be “Kill all the pretty girls!” I assumed they’d move Spoiler into the new Batgirl slot, but now that it’s definite, I’ll look into this series though I liked Cassandra quite a bit, until they decided that she was temporarily crazy (Thanks, Didio!).
And don’t get me wrong, I’m a hardcore Tim Drake guy. I remember actually buying the issue where that silly little kid tracked down Bruce Wayne and informed him that he knew who Batman and Robin were. And when he saved Batman’s ass from Scarecrow. And when he eventually had his own miniseries (which is still one of the most memorable comics ever from my youth).
But I really dug Spoiler as Robin. I felt like it worked. And then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, Batman/editorial is like “No, this does not work. Let’s bring Tim back just in time to kill his dad.” I’d have preferred to see Stephanie stay as Robin then and have Tim move onto something new. The new Red Robin series is nothing to write home about, but I really like the idea of it, you know? It really goes back to the roots of that original Robin miniseries in a way. In fact, Tim Drake’s Robin felt like the first really independent Robin to me. Sure, back in the day, Dick had a whole seperate life with the Titans, but still that was a group, and Tim just goes out there on his own.
I don’t know, what does everyone else think?
